- 5:30 PM1hTerrell Strayhorn: Who Gets to Belong? Unmasking Injustice and Reimagining Education for AllBehind the polished surfaces of test scores, school rankings, and policy reforms lies a more complex truth: too many students struggle to find a sense of belonging in educational systems not built with them in mind. In this timely and provocative lecture, Dr. Terrell Strayhorn—internationally recognized scholar, author, and public speaker—pulls back the curtain on systemic issues that shape educational opportunities and outcomes for today’s students. Drawing on cutting-edge research, lived experiences, and community narratives, Dr. Strayhorn explores what it means to truly belong in schools, colleges, and society—and why it matters. This talk will challenge attendees to rethink the role of educators, leaders, and community members in transforming education into a more just, human-centered enterprise that meets the needs of all learners. A call to action for students, faculty, policymakers, and the public alike.Dr. Terrell Strayhorn, professor at Virginia Union University and CEO of Do Good Work Educational Consulting, is one of the most prolific and influential scholars in the fields of education, psychology, and the academic study of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Named of the country’s “Top Diversity Scholars” by Diverse Issues in Higher Education and a remarkable “Bridge-Builder” between academic- and student affairs by one of ACPA’s commissions, Strayhorn has authored 14 books, including the award-winning College Students’ Sense of Belonging (2nd ed, 2019), and over 200+ peer-reviewed journal articles and academic publications.Brought to you by The URI Honors Colloquium, an annual fall lecture series hosted at URI, serves as a university-wide educational forum that’s also open to the public.
