Title: Expanding Ocean Observing Systems for Weather and Climate: From the Northeast US to the Caribbean SeaSpeaker: Dr. Travis Miles, Rutgers UniversityAbstract: Over the past three decades in situ ocean observing capabilities have expanded rapidly, becoming robust multi-platform networks capable of supporting broad stakeholder needs with real-time data delivery. In parallel, the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) has been focused on connecting those networks with stakeholders from local communities, regional and global forecasting systems, and multi-disciplinary research teams. In this presentation I will broadly discuss the 1) growth and implementation of the hurricane glider network from the Northeast US through the Caribbean; 2) the impacts of upper ocean observations on operational ocean forecasting during hurricanes; and 3) exploration of new findings of climate trends in the Caribbean Sea.

The BES Colloquium Series is the research seminar series for the College of Environmental Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. BES students nominate speakers from across several disciplines including: Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB), Ecology and Ecosystem Science (EES), Environmental and Earth Sciences (EVES), Evolution and Marine Biology (EMB), and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS). URI's Forensic Science Partnership lecture series is one of the more unique lecture series in Rhode Island. The Oct. 31 topic is "Overdose response strategy, trends, and emerging threats,” with Bryan Volpe and Tom Chadronet, New England High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. Volpe is a drug intelligence officer at NEHIDTA; Chadronet is a public health analyst with the agency, which assists federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to lessen and eliminate drug threats in New England. All lectures are open to the public at no cost and are held on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. in the Richard E. Beaupre Center for Chemical and Forensic Sciences (Room 100), 140 Flagg Rd., Kingston.
