- Nov 1912:00 PM'A Nearly Perfect Memory': The Theory, Practice, and Struggles of History in The Kingkiller Chronicle with Richard M. McGeeThe third fall event in the Center for Humanities Brown Bag series. While history and fantasy are normally seen as opposites, that does not preclude some fantasy series from containing allegories for how historians do their work. The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss is one such example. In tandem with Rothfuss’ works, McGee’s talk will philosophize on traits of academic history that are often subject to critical analysis by trained historians, including historiography and methodology, the concept of “objectivity” in study and research, the struggles of memory and oral history, narrative revisionism, and the difference between public and professional history.
- Nov 1912:00 PMBio at Noon: Dr. Jim YoderTitle: GSO, 1896-1962: “Only the beginning, only just the start”Speaker: Dr. Jim Yoder, URI GSOAbstract: Upon his retirement in the early 1990s, GSO asked Bob Sexton, former Assistant Dean to John Knauss, to write a history of GSO. Bob wrote 5 chapters which covered the period 1896 to 1962. The document apparently never reached GSO until two decades later when, on his death bed in 2017, Bob asked a friend to make sure that his research materials and document drafts get to GSO. Dave Smith picked them up. Later, Mike Pilson added some edits to the type-written drafts, and a couple years ago Dave asked me if I would finish the project.Bob Sexton’s history starts with a squabble in 1896 within the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts involving the agricultural lobby versus a newly hired professor of zoology, Dr. George W. Field. Field saw great opportunities for the commercial development of the biological resources of Narragansett Bay, whereas the Aggies only saw unwanted competition with their cow, corn and potato research. Field tolerated the tense situation for a few years but then left the college. Fortunately, this was not the end of Rhode Island marine programs. In 1937, Charlie and Marie Fish moved to Rhode Island College in Kingston where Charlie became Chair of the Zoology Department, and Marie continued here research projects. Charlie’s goal was to establish a marine field station and his bold vision, determination, and persistence led to the formation of the Narragansett Marine Laboratory in 1937 at South Ferry. Marine research, including Marie’s studies of the biological sources of sound in the ocean funded by the US Navy, prospered under Charlie’s direction of NML despite various setbacks including destruction of a building by the 1938 hurricane, a fire which destroyed another building, and bureaucratic in-fighting within the college. As an aside, both Marie and Charlie participated in the Arcturus global ocean expedition, which led to a brief write-up in the very first issue of the New Yorker magazine under the theme, why would anyone want to spend so much time wandering the ocean. During the expedition, Marie made an astounding discovery which contributed to the story of one of the great mysteries of biological oceanography.By 1962, NML was an important part of a young and growing URI, had its own campus at South Ferry, some degree of autonomy within the university, strong support from the university president and was well-positioned to take advantage of the increasing US interest in oceanography. All it needed was a visionary leader. John Knauss, recently hired as the first Dean of the newly created GSO, was on his way. To be continued.
