Oct 30, 2025: Fall Symposium - Teaching Outside the Box at Memorial UnionThe Fall Symposium this year is a celebration of those people at URI who “teach outside the box”. The people who help students uncover their love for something new; those who mentor students and help them adjust their path; those who recognize that the most efficient path is not necessarily the straight one. The best path is the one that leads students where they want to go. This Symposium celebrates those of you who walk those paths with students. - Oct 31, 2025: Physical Oceanography Seminar: Dr. Travis Miles at Narragansett Bay CampusTitle: Expanding Ocean Observing Systems for Weather and Climate: From the Northeast US to the Caribbean Sea Speaker: Dr. Travis Miles, Rutgers University Abstract: Over the past three decades in situ ocean observing capabilities have expanded rapidly, becoming robust multi-platform networks capable of supporting broad stakeholder needs with real-time data delivery. In parallel, the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) has been focused on connecting those networks with stakeholders from local communities, regional and global forecasting systems, and multi-disciplinary research teams. In this presentation I will broadly discuss the 1) growth and implementation of the hurricane glider network from the Northeast US through the Caribbean; 2) the impacts of upper ocean observations on operational ocean forecasting during hurricanes; and 3) exploration of new findings of climate trends in the Caribbean Sea.
