Join the University of Rhode Island Mock Trial Team for a live courtroom showdown inspired by a nationally recognized collegiate case! In this dramatized civil trial, a millionaire dies on a luxury train, and now one sibling is pointing fingers while the other fights to inherit it all. Two sides: the Plaintiff and the Defendant. One will walk away with the money... unless the jury has other plans. The event will take place on Saturday, April 26th from 4:00–7:00 PM in the Center for Biological Life Sciences, Room 010. Uhuru Sasa, established in 1972 at the University of Rhode Island (URI), is a student organization dedicated to promoting cultural, social, and educational enrichment for all members of the university community. The group focuses on fostering diversity, unity, friendship, and love on campus through various educational, historical, literary, and artistic initiatives.One of Uhuru Sasa's most anticipated events is its annual fashion show. This event not only showcases fashion but also serves as a platform to celebrate cultural diversity and creativity within the URI community. For instance, in 2014, the 10th Annual Fashion Show was held at the URI Memorial Union, featuring a fashion show followed by an after-party. ​ Each year's fashion show typically centers around a unique theme, reflecting the organization's commitment to cultural expression and artistic excellence. In 2016, the show was titled "Fashion for the Gods," highlighting divine inspirations in fashion. The URI Opera Workshop, Devon Russo director, The URI Copncert Choir, Mark Conley director, and the URI Symphony Orchestra, Luis Víquez director combine forces to present the rarely performed Scenes from Goethe's Faust, a musical-theatrical work by the 19th century German composer Robert Schumann. Fifty-five years ago, during the Apollo 8 Mission, astronaut William Anders took the first color photo of the Earth. For the first time, the general public was able to see the world in its entirety, a tiny blue marble enveloped in the vast, inky blackness of Space. The Earth could no longer be thought of as an endless, invincible resource. More than ever, people understood the planet’s vulnerability and importance. Suddenly, environmentalism took off: the EPA was formed, Earth Day was declared a holiday, protections for endangered species were put in place, and standards for clean air and water were established. Unfortunately, in the years since, passion and public encouragement for sustainable practices has steadily declined. The earth’s deterioration became normalized, politicized, thought of as insurmountable, or ‘Not my problem’. Let’s bring back a culture that cares about the environment!
