- May 3010:30 AMPhysical Oceanography Seminar: Dr. Givo AlsepanTitle: A potential pathway for AMOC influence on sub-seasonal atmospheric variabilitySpeaker: Dr. Givo Alsepan, Postdoctoral Research Associate, Florida State UniversityAbstract: The importance of Gulf Stream (GS) variability for Northern Hemisphere weather and climate has received considerable support in recent years. Recent observational advances show that significant GS variability occurs on multiple timescales, including sub-seasonal. Recently, a high degree of sub-seasonal variability has also been observed in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), suggesting a potential connection between the sub-seasonal AMOC and mid-latitude atmosphere via the GS. Modeling studies, however, are yet to agree on the exact relationship between AMOC and GS variability, partly due to the lack of eddy-scale resolution. Here, a novel ensemble of eddy-rich model simulations is used to investigate the patterns of co-variability between AMOC and fine-scale sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the GS on sub-seasonal timescales as a function of time lag. Our results reveal that wintertime variability in GS SST and its meridional gradient is preceded by AMOC variability in the previous summer. These AMOC-induced SST gradient anomalies then drive air temperature gradient anomalies through changes in the differential air-sea sensible heat flux. The findings indicate a potential pathway through which deeper ocean circulation precedes atmospheric variability via the GS. The identification of this pathway may provide a potential source of untapped predictability in weather forecast and climate prediction systems.

- Jun 103:30 PMMetcalf Institute Leeson LectureJoin the Metcalf Institute for its 2025 Leeson Lecture: “Just Sustainabilities in Policy, Planning and Practice,” a talk by Dr. Julian Agyeman, author and professor of urban and environmental policy and planning at Tufts University, whose research focuses on environmental and food justice as well as the nexus of food and immigration. The Leeson Lecture is part of Metcalf’s Annual Public Lecture Series, which features experts in climate and environmental science, communication and public policy. In his talk, Dr. Agyeman will outline the concept of just sustainabilities as a response to the “equity deficit” of most sustainability thinking and practices. He will explore his contention that who can belong in our cities will ultimately determine what our cities can become and will illustrate his ideas with examples from urban planning and design, food justice and the “Minneapolis Paradox.”All members of the community are invited to this free talk. Books will be available for purchase and author signing. Parking is available at 218 South Ferry Road and 15 Pier Road, Narragansett. Map and directions here. Parking with maximum accessibility is available at the west end of the Watkins Building and in the lower lot of the Ocean Science and Exploration Center.
