This Week In Sports – 9/18

Football

FINAL (9/13): University of Rhode Island 9-7 College of the Holy Cross

Rhode Island football grinded out a defensive battle on the road against Holy Cross on Saturday, failing to score any touchdowns but coming away with the victory regardless. Fifth-year kicker Garth White, who transferred from the University of Southern California before this season, was perfect on his three field goal attempts. He hit from 24 yards and 29 yards before his 41-yarder with 2:23 left in the game put URI ahead for good.

The Rams’ offense managed 402 yards of total offense and 6.3 yards per play but couldn’t find the end zone, partially due to their 11 penalties on the afternoon, which accounted for 92 lost yards.

On the defensive side, five different Rhode Island players recorded a sack, including third-year linebacker Moses Meus, who was named Coastal Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. Meus registered a team-high seven tackles to go along with the sack. Second-year linebacker Rohan Davy also registered a sack and has done so in every game so far this season. Men’s Soccer

FINAL (9/13): URI 1-1 Fordham University

FINAL (9/16): Brown University 1-0 URI

Men’s soccer earned a tie at home against Fordham in its Atlantic 10 Conference opener, then continued the homestand with a loss to Brown in a game that wasn’t decided until the 81st minute.

A 75th-minute header from second-year Theo Harris was just enough to eke out a tie against Fordham on Saturday. His second goal of the season was assisted by first-year Sebastian Bernsten, the first of Bernsten’s collegiate career. In net, first-year keeper Lenno Schmidt made five saves and improved his record to 1-1-2 on the young season.

Returning home for an in-state rivalry, the Rams remained deadlocked with the Bears throughout much of the game. Third-year Caleb McNeil got the start in goal and made six saves before conceding the winner to first-year Mateo Pereyra, giving Brown a 1-0 victory. Women’s Soccer

FINAL (9/11): University of Connecticut 2-0 URI

FINAL (9/14): URI 1-0 Holy Cross

The Rams split their two games this week with a loss at home against UConn before bouncing back with a road win over Holy Cross three days later.

Facing a Huskies team that had allowed just three goals in five matches entering the game, the Rams were blanked in the scoring column for the first time this season. They held the advantage over UConn in shots (8-4) and shots on goal (4-2) through one half of play, but managed just three shots and one shot on goal in the second half. Second-year keeper Dani Eden registered a season-high six saves.

URI followed that game up with a match in Worcester, Massachusetts, against Holy Cross to wrap up its nonconference schedule. That contest remained scoreless for nearly 89 minutes before first-year defender Lily Camacho scored from 40 yards out to give Rhode Island a lead it would not relinquish. In goal, Eden registered her fifth shutout in eight games this season. For more, check out Tyler Powell’s article (page 11, rhodycigar.com).

Volleyball traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the Fight in the Fort hosted by TCU this past week. The Rams were unable to win a set as they faced two nationally ranked opponents two weeks before the start of conference play.

The Rams received contributions from up and down the roster. Second-year Erika Bracey led the squad with eight kills against Missouri before fifth-year Emma Vente registered a team-high six kills against TCU, and first-year McKenna Melton paced Rhode Island with six kills against Wyoming.

In their home opener on Monday, the Rams struggled against a Wildcats team that became 9-1 after winning in straight sets. Third-year Aerin Bowman had a season-best 11 kills, and first-year Autumn Tombline came one assist short of her career high with 15 in only two sets.
