Despite the 3,200-mile distance between the University of Rhode Island and Wales, the Wales National Team and the URI women’s lacrosse team shared the field at Meade Stadium on Tuesday.

Meade Stadium was the fourth stop on the Wales National Team’s “Boston Tour.” Other schools that Wales has scrimmaged on the tour include Roger Williams University and Bryant University, and the first game of its doubleheader on Tuesday was against Harvard University before making the trip down to face Rhode Island later in the day.

URI Head Coach Jenna Slowey was presented with the unique opportunity to face international competition and took advantage of it.

“Carina [Bates], the [Wales National Team] head coach, reached out to me, and I thought, what an awesome opportunity for us,” Slowey said. “The fall for us is really about building chemistry and camaraderie, especially with our new kids coming in and a couple of transfers.”

URI won the match, but there wasn’t a heavy emphasis on the final score; the team was mainly just trying to take in the whole experience of playing an international team, according to fifth-year captain Caitlin Dellecave.

“It was definitely pretty interesting to play a mix of NCAA and international rules,” Dellecave said. “It was interesting to see the different age groups playing together in one game because the rules have changed so much over time.”

The Rams finished 8-8 in their inaugural season last spring and went 4-6 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. URI finished seventh in the A-10 standings, missing the A-10 Tournament by one spot.

The Rams only graduated two players last year, as the majority of the team will be returning for the 2026 season along with a few new additions from the transfer portal. With their first full season under their belt, the team is looking to build off the momentum from last year and make the A-10 Tournament this spring in their second season as a Division I program.

“I think we just have more confidence now,” Dellecave said. “We have a lot more girls that have game experience, and I think that was something we really lacked [last year].”

The Wales National Team will have three more stops on their “Boston Tour,” visiting Boston College, Boston University and Brown University.

For the Rams, the final event on their fall schedule is a match at the University of Vermont on Oct. 25; after that, Rhody will be out of action until the spring. Their spring schedule has not yet been released, but their season is expected to begin around the middle of February.
