Football

FINAL (10/25): University of Rhode Island 38-17 Bryant University

Football celebrated family weekend by taking down in-state rival Bryant on Saturday. The Bulldogs struck first with an early passing touchdown, but second-year running back Gabe Winowich responded with a 51-yard rushing touchdown five minutes later. His five-yard rushing touchdown just 44 seconds later to give the Rams a 14-7 lead cemented his career day. Winowich’s final stats of 13 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns were all career highs.

The Rams held Bryant scoreless in the second half to secure a record of .500 or better for the sixth straight season. Fifth-year defensive back Ayinde Johnson’s pick-six iced the game for Rhode Island and made it 14-2 in its last 16 games against Coastal Athletic Association opponents.

Fifth-year kicker Garth White set a new URI record with a 54-yard field goal toward the end of the first half. For more, read Michael Petraske’s article (page 12, rhodycigar.com).

In the Rams’ match against the Ramblers on Thursday, Oct. 23, third-year Lauren MacDonald scored her seventh goal of the season and 16th of her career on the first penalty kick for Rhody all year. Her goal was all URI could manage and led to its second tie of the season.

The Rams were unable to get into the scoring column on Sunday when they faced a Dayton team that had already recorded 12 shutouts on the season. The Flyers entered play ranked second in the nation in shutout percentage at .706.

The loss locked URI into the fourth seed in the A-10 Tournament, the highest the team has placed in the standings in 11 years. It’ll host a first-round playoff game against fifth-ranked VCU on Friday. For more, read Carlos Pinto’s article (rhodycigar.com).
