The University of Rhode Island women’s soccer team split its two matches this past week with a 5-0 win against George Washington University on Thursday, Oct. 16, and a 4-1 loss to Saint Louis University on Sunday.
The Rams made the trip to the nation’s capital on Thursday to take on George Washington as they looked to extend their unbeaten streak to five games.
In the 15th minute, URI third-year forward Lauren MacDonald sent her corner kick into the box and put enough curve on it to score her fifth goal of the season and give URI a lead. The Rams held George Washington to only one shot for the rest of the first half after MacDonald’s goal.
In the 57th minute, URI fifth-year forward and midfielder Mie Carstensen headed the ball into the net off of a cross to the back post from fourth-year forward McKenna Sylvester. The goal gave Rhody a 2-0 lead and marked the fourth time in five games that the team scored multiple goals in a game.
Rhody put this game out of reach in the final 10 minutes as they tacked on three more goals. MacDonald scored her second goal of the game in the 81st minute, then Sylvester tacked on a goal in the 86th minute to go with her assist earlier in the second half. With less than two minutes left, URI third-year forward Megan Steinbach scored the fifth goal of the game as Rhody won 5-0. This win extended the unbeaten streak to five games and was the seventh shutout in eight games for the Rams.
Next up on the schedule for the Rams was a home matchup pitting third-place Rhody against second-place Saint Louis on Sunday.
The Rams took an early 1-0 lead off a Sylvester free-kick goal. Sylvester’s kick bent the ball toward the top left corner of the net and got it past the outstretched fingers of Billikens second-year keeper Emma Parker.
“It was awesome,” Sylvester said. “I think it really brought the energy up and brought the team together.”
Five minutes later, URI third-year defender Lily Camacho tripped SLU second-year forward Hope Kim inside the penalty box, giving SLU a penalty kick opportunity. SLU fifth-year forward/midfielder Julia Simon converted the penalty kick and tied the game at 1-1. This was the first goal given up by third-year goalkeeper Dani Eden since a 1-0 loss to La Salle University on Sept. 25.
The second half belonged to Saint Louis as it scored three goals to pull away from the Rams and secure the win.
In the 49th minute, Kim headed the ball into the net off of Saint Louis fourth-year Izzy Luebbert’s free kick that was sent into the penalty box. 10 minutes later, Simon once again scored off a penalty kick after Eden pushed Saint Louis second-year forward Audrey Smith out of the way of a corner kick.
“We have to do better,” URI Head Coach Megan Jessee said. “[With] two penalty kicks, we can’t allow the officials to make that much of an impact on the game.”
In the 87th minute, Saint Louis put the nail in the coffin as Simon completed the hat trick off of a second-chance attempt. Smith crossed the ball into the six-yard box before Eden knocked the pass away, but the ball rolled right toward the foot of Simon, who was left with a wide-open net and scored.
“I think we’ll see them again in the [Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament],” Jessee said. “Obviously there’s lessons to be learned from this game when you play a good team like that. They’ll make you pay if you make mistakes in key moments, and they did.”
This was the first time URI let up multiple goals in a game since a 2-0 loss on Sept. 11 against the University of Connecticut. Four goals is also the most amount of goals let up by the Rams all season.
The Rams have two games left in the regular season, going on the road to face Loyola University Chicago on Thursday, Oct. 23, before wrapping up the season at home against first-place University of Dayton on Sunday. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
