This Week In Sports – 10/9
Football
FINAL (10/3): Brown University 28-21 University of Rhode Island
Rhode Island suffered its second consecutive loss this season on Saturday, losing to in-state rival Brown. Rhode Island never led in the game, and four turnovers gave Brown a multitude of opportunities that the Bears were able to capitalize on. On the first drive of the game, Rhode Island third-year quarterback Devin Farrell threw an interception and set up Brown for a six-yard touchdown run by Brown second-year running back Matt Childs.
Rhode Island was able to open the second half with a quick three-and-out, and the offense quickly drove down the field. Farrell connected with third-year wide receiver Greg Gaines for 33 yards, but as Gaines reached for the goal line, he lost control of the football and fumbled it out of the end zone for a touchback. The touchdown would have tied the game. For more, read David Okula’s article (page 11, rhodycigar.com).

The Rams’ defense was able to hold up through the remainder of the game, and second-year Theo Harris slammed the door shut with a goal in the 89th minute.
Rhody exploded for their most goals since Oct. 10, 2023 in a 6-1 victory over Duquesne at the URI Soccer Complex on Wednesday. Third-year Tiago Barriguinha and fourth-year Mathias Taylor both added two goals apiece for the Rams. For more, visit Abby LePage’s article (page 10, rhodycigar.com).

The rest of the first half remained 1-0. Six minutes into the second half, third-year Nika Jacobs found the back of the net off of an assist from fifth-year Mie Carstensen.
Sunday’s game against Richmond was a pure defensive battle at both ends of the pitch. Both defenses were locked in, as there were only five shots on goal allowed from each side. For more, read Chase Abrams’ article (page 12, rhodycigar.com).
