CAA Power Rankings – Week 10
Six teams in the Coastal Athletic Association took the week off, but we did not.
Each week, The Good Five Cent Cigar Sports Staff comes up with its cumulative ranking of CAA football teams.
Here is how the CAA is looking at the end of week 10:
14th Place: University at Albany Great Danes (1-8, 0-5) (-)
Welcome to the shadow realm, UAlbany. Another lopsided loss keeps the Great Danes firmly in last place, and they don’t seem to have any plans of leaving that spot.
UAlbany has its last real shot at a conference win coming up on Saturday against Bryant University. This program played in a Football Championship Subdivision semifinal game just two seasons ago, which becomes more surprising by the week.
13th Place: Hampton University Pirates (2-7, 0-5) (-)
Hampton had the week off after three straight losses. The Pirates are one of three teams without a conference win; while the other two losers are facing each other next week, they are stuck with the University of Maine.
With the losers’ club guaranteed to shrink, Hampton’s last goal this season should be to avoid being the lone loser left.
12th Place: North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Aggies (2-7, 2-3) (-3)
Maybe we gave the Aggies too much credit for a strong win over Campbell University two weeks ago; now they’ve crashed back down to Earth.
NC A&T crashed hard, and I mean a 62-9 loss to Towson University hard. The Aggies’ defense is averaging over 40 points allowed per game, which won’t work well to support the third-worst offense in the conference.
11th Place: Bryant University Bulldogs (2-7, 0-5) (+1)
It’s hard to gain a spot in a losing week, but the Bulldogs managed to after a 28-point loss to Monmouth University. NC A&T’s defeat makes a mere 28-point loss feel reasonable, especially against the top offense in the conference.
The Bulldogs have been through the ringer this season, and especially these past two weeks. We’ll throw a dog a bone and see if Bryant can fetch a first-ever CAA win on Saturday at UAlbany.
10th Place: Campbell University Camels (2-7, 2-3) (-)
Campbell couldn’t seem to catch a break before the bye week. Now coming off a break, the Camels face the College of William and Mary on Saturday.
It’s been tight defeats all season long, but it still feels like there is a sneaky good team here. The Camels’ second-worst defense in the conference is the biggest thing holding them back.
9th Place: Stony Brook University Seawolves (4-5, 2-3) (-1)
Stony Brook made a bad loss look better with some late scores on Saturday. Maine led 28-7 before 14 unanswered points for the Seawolves finished off the game.
Their next opponent knows a thing or two about allowing unanswered points, which could allow Stony Brook to carry over its late momentum. NC A&T is fresh off allowing 55 unanswered and shows no signs of slowing down.
8th Place: Towson University Tigers (4-5, 2-3) (+3)
Towson took a three-game losing streak into the weekend and walked out with their best offensive performance of the season. The Tigers doubled their 31-point performance against Monmouth with 62 points on Saturday.
In the blowout, Towson had some fun with four different quarterbacks checking into the game. But now it is back to business against one of the conference’s best, facing a rested Villanova University.
7th Place: Elon University Phoenix (4-5, 2-3) (-)
Elon earned two conference wins before dropping three straight. Hopefully, this week off was what the Phoenix needed to right the ship.
With the University of Rhode Island coming into town, Elon will need its A-game against one of the best the conference has to offer.
6th Place: University of New Hampshire Wildcats (5-4, 3-2) (-1)
UNH was the only team that lost ground due to its bye week. The Wildcats can’t control the uncontrollable, but they can find themselves in next week’s top three if they knock off Monmouth on Saturday.
With Monmouth sixth-year quarterback Derek Robertson being injured and considered week-to-week, it remains to be seen if his return is on the table. Either way, New Hampshire should have its hands full.
5th Place: College of William and Mary Tribe (5-4, 4-2) (+1)
William and Mary return to the top five after a win in the mini-bye week, also known as playing UAlbany. The Tribe handled business against a bad team, but faces a better team coming off a bye on the road against Campbell this week.
The Camels can often be a tough team, but a win in enemy territory against them could go a long way toward locking the Tribe into a top-five spot for the rest of the season.
4th Place: University of Maine Black Bears (5-4, 4-1) (-)
Maine continues to win with a run-of-the-mill offense backed by a top-three defense. Now winners of five straight, the Black Bears have a chance to make a statement against Hampton.
Sixth-year quarterback Carter Peevy could use the chance to pad some stats after his first two-interception game of the season on Saturday.
3rd Place: No. 10/14 University of Rhode Island Rams (7-2, 5-0) (-)
Rhode Island idled this week before its final road trip of the season. The next two opponents, Elon and Maine, have both shown the ability to threaten a top team like the Rams, and winning on the road is never easy.
If this team is who we think they are, they shouldn’t struggle too much. It starts on Saturday in North Carolina.
2nd Place: No. 8/10 Villanova University Wildcats (6-2, 5-1) (-)
Villanova has five straight wins and is in a perfect position for an at-large playoff bid with just two conference games remaining.
With the Wildcats returning from their bye week, they will have to slow down a Towson team fresh off dropping 62 points.
1st Place: No. 6/7 Monmouth University Hawks (8-1, 5-0) (-)
Monmouth went out and did Monmouth things again this past weekend; regardless of Robertson’s health, the Hawks continue to win comfortably.
On Saturday, it was third-year running back Rodney Nelson leading the way with 306 all-purpose yards. The defense also delivered its best performance of the season, allowing just seven points.
