This Week In Sports – 11/5

Men’s Basketball

FINAL (11/3): University of Rhode Island 93-62 Stetson University

Rhode Island opened its 2025-26 season with a dominant 93-62 win over Stetson on Monday night at the Ryan Center. Six Rams scored in double figures, including all five starters. The Rams never trailed, building their largest lead of 34 points with just over three minutes remaining. Rhode Island’s defense set the tone, holding Stetson without a field goal for the final 2:34 of the first half and forcing 16 steals overall–11 of them being after halftime. Women’s Basketball

FINAL (11/3): URI 56-38 University of Manhattan

Rhode Island overcame a cold third quarter to defeat Manhattan 56-38 in its season opener on Monday night. Both teams started slow, missing their first 15 shots before second-year Palmire Mbu hit a three-pointer to put the Rams on the board. Fourth-year Brooklyn Gray’s triple capped a 14-4 first quarter for Rhode Island, who led 32-12 at halftime behind strong defense that held the Jaspers to 17.9% shooting.

The Rams managed just four points in the third as Manhattan cut the deficit to seven, but Rhode Island closed with a 10-2 run over the final four minutes to seal the win. For more, read Charlie Adams’ recap.

Men’s Soccer

FINAL (11/1): URI 1-1 Saint Louis University

Rhode Island’s postseason hopes ended painfully Saturday, as an offsides call with 27 seconds left erased a potential game-winning goal, forcing the Rams to settle for a 1-1 draw with No. 22 Saint Louis. Due to the draw, the Rams finished just one point short of qualifying for the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. For more, read Tyler Powell’s article.

Women’s Soccer

FINAL (10/31): URI 2-1 Virginia Commonwealth University

FINAL (11/5): URI 4-2 Saint Louis

No. 4 Rhode Island scored twice in the first half and held off No. 5 VCU 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament’s first round Friday night, with goals from third-year Lauren MacDonald and fourth-year Sarah Yee securing the Rams’ spot in the semifinals.

The Rams delivered a statement win against the seven-time defending champions SLU on Wednesday evening. MacDonald scored two goals to secure the 4-2 win. For more, visit Michael Petraske’s recap.

Rowing

Princeton Chase (11/2)

19th, 39th and 50th out 62 boats

Rhode Island had three boats compete in the Princeton Chase this past weekend. Its best- performing boat came in 18th place with a time of 15:02.092. For more, read Carlos Pinto’s recap.

Swim and Dive

FINAL (11/1): University of Connecticut 188-112 URI

FINAL (11/5): URI 150-131 Providence College

Connecticut won 11 of 16 events to defeat Rhode Island 188-112 in a head-to-head meet on Saturday. First-year Molly Beckwith led Rhody with victories in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle, her third straight win in the event.

The Rams traveled to Providence for a duel against the Friars on Wednesday afternoon. URI defeated PC 150-131 with wins in each of the last four events. For more, visit Charlie Adams’ recap.

Volleyball

FINAL (11/1): George Mason University 3-2 URI

FINAL (11/2): URI 4-1 George Mason University

Rhode Island took the opening set on Saturday behind second-year Erika Bracey’s late block and kill, hitting .343 as a team. Despite strong defense and eight blocks in set four to extend the match, George Mason closed with a 15-11 fifth-set win after scoring the final four points.

Rhode Island defeated George Mason 3-1 on Sunday, taking sets 25-23, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-20. Second-year Havyn Rolle fueled the offense with timely kills and aces, while strong blocking and serving runs helped the Rams control momentum and secure the home victory. Men’s Cross Country

Atlantic 10 Championship (11/1): Third out of 14 teams

Rhode Island matched its best finish in program history at the Atlantic 10 Championship, surging from sixth to third in the final two kilometers. Third-year Nick Martin led the Rams, earning All-Atlantic 10 honors with an eighth-place finish. For more, read Abby LePage’s recap.

Women’s Cross Country

Atlantic 10 Championship (11/1): 10th out of 14 teams

Fourth-year Lily Saul led Rhode Island at the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship, placing 13th and earning All-Atlantic 10 honors. The Rams finished 10th as a team, with first years Keaney Bayha and Jordan Hadfield also scoring. For more, visit Jackie Herbert’s recap.
