CAA Power Rankings- Week 5

Heading into October, every team in the Coastal Athletic Association now has at least one win and one loss after a week filled with conference matchups.

Every week, The Good Five Cent Cigar Sports Staff comes up with a cumulative ranking of the conference.

Here is how each team fared after the fifth week:

14th Place: University at Albany Great Danes (1-4, 0-1) (-1)

The Great Danes traveled to Durham, New Hampshire on Saturday and left with their tails tucked between their legs after being handed a 24-6 loss by the University of New Hampshire.

After missing a 32-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, the Great Danes were unable to get on the scoreboard until there was 3:08 remaining in the contest. New Hampshire finished the game with 308 total yards in comparison to UAlbany’s 275, with the difference-maker being the Wildcats’ ability to come up big on crucial plays.

13th Place: Hampton University Pirates (1-4, 0-2) (-1)

Extending their losing streak to three, the Pirates took on conference foe Elon University over the weekend and were handed a 41-20 defeat by the Phoenix.

Hampton outscored Elon 14-7 in the third quarter, but let the game fall through its fingers after giving up 17 points in the final frame. After a three-game road trip, the Pirates will look to bounce back with two consecutive home games in the coming weeks.

12th Place: North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Aggies (1-4, 1-1) (-4)

Despite a late attempted comeback, the Aggies handed the University of Maine its first win of the season in a 37-30 score over the weekend.

The Aggies’ slow starts have become a concerning pattern in their first five games and are something that needs to be fixed if they want any chance at consistently winning games.

11th Place: University of Maine Black Bears (1-4, 1-1) (+3)

Jumping from last place in last week’s rankings, the Black Bears snapped their four-game losing streak thanks to a 23-point second quarter against the Aggies.

Fifth-year quarterback Carter Peevy threw for 298 yards for the Black Bears and had three touchdowns in the contest. Despite the Aggies returning a punt for a touchdown in the game’s final two minutes, the Black Bears’ defense held strong to earn a big conference win.

10th Place: Campbell University Camels (1-4, 1-1) (-6)

The Camels ranked in our bottom three two weeks ago, jumped to fourth place last week and now they are back in the double digits. Clearly, this team has been hard to get a read on.

After taking down Bryant University in a thrilling overtime win on Saturday, the Camels hosted Western Carolina University on Saturday and fell short of coming back from a 25-point deficit, losing 42-35. A scoreless first quarter hindered any opportunity of jumping ahead in the contest, and despite a 17-point fourth quarter, the Camels fell short of their goal.

9th Place: Bryant University Bulldogs (2-3, 0-2) (-4)

A similar story to the bottom-five teams in our rankings, the Bulldogs posted only nine points in the first half against Towson University on Saturday and went the entire third quarter without scoring a point.

Despite fifth-year running back Elijah Elliott scoring his second and third touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs’ attempt at a two-point conversion was stopped by Towson’s defense, which finalized the 26-24 loss.

8th Place: Stony Brook University Seawolves (2-3, 0-1) (+3)

In a convincing 35-10 win over Merrimack College on Saturday, the Seawolves were able to score in every quarter. With 27:43 of possession time in comparison to MC’s 32:17, the Seawolves notched 438 total yards, compared to Merrimack’s 223.

This was the Seawolves’ last nonconference matchup, and they will look to get to .500 against UAlbany on Saturday.

7th Place: College of William and Mary Tribe (2-3, 1-1) (-4)

In a well-matched, back-and-forth battle, the Tribe’s 17-14 lead at halftime was wiped out in a scoreless third quarter and capitalized on by Villanova University over the weekend. The Tribe could not bounce back and fell 31-24.

Fortunately for the Tribe, this loss was on the road, and they’ll be back at home to take on NC A&T on Saturday.

6th Place: No. 18/19 Villanova University Wildcats (2-2, 1-1) (+3)

Despite notching 11 penalties for 91 yards lost in their matchup with the Tribe, the Wildcats held on to earn their first conference win of the season over the weekend.

Second-year running backs David Avit and Ja’briel Mace combined for four touchdowns in the game. The Wildcats are back at .500 and will look to earn a winning record as they travel to take on the University of New Hampshire this weekend.

5th Place: University of New Hampshire Wildcats (3-2, 1-0) (+1)

Back in the top five, the Wildcats completed an all-around effort and held UAlbany to just one touchdown on Saturday. All three touchdowns came from different Wildcat players.

Following the win, UNH will be tested in its second conference matchup against Villanova on Saturday.

4th Place: Elon University Phoenix (3-2, 1-0) (+3)

Coming back from trailing 20-17 against Hampton late in the third quarter, the Phoenix showcased their resiliency by pulling off a victory in their first conference game of the season on Saturday.

It looks like the Phoenix have found their groove offensively, as they went 5-5 in the red zone, improving to 21-for-23 on red zone visits this season. They will travel to Towson University to take on the Tigers this weekend.

3rd Place: Towson University Tigers (3-2, 1-0) (+7)

An impressive win over the Bulldogs jumped the Tigers up significantly in our rankings this week. The Tigers’ defense came through with a forced fumble and an interception in the contest on Saturday.

This is the second week that the Tigers have moved at least four spots in our rankings. With this win, the Tigers have proven they can compete on both sides of the field and hold on when the score is tight.

2nd Place: No. 12/14 Monmouth University Hawks (3-1, 1-0) (-)

The Hawks didn’t play in week five, but they are set up for success following their last game, a 51-33 win over Villanova on Sept. 20.

After a week’s rest, the Hawks will host Delaware State University in their final nonconference game of the season.

1st Place: No. 8/10 University of Rhode Island (4-1, 2-0) (-)

Rhody suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Football Bowl Subdivision opponent Western Michigan University on Saturday.

URI kicked things off with an opening drive touchdown, but a 28-point second quarter for the Broncos to go up 31-7 at halftime put the game out of reach. Ultimately, the visiting Rams were defeated 47-14. The Rams will finish their four-game stint of nonconference matchups against Brown University on Saturday.
