This Week In Sports – 10/23

Football

FINAL (10/18): University of Rhode Island 58-17 University at Albany

Fourth-year A.J. Pena became Rhode Island’s all-time sacks leader, and fourth-year Devin Farrell threw four touchdown passes as No. 15/16 Rhode Island rolled past UAlbany 58-17 on Saturday. The Rams scored in every quarter, posting their highest point total since 1982. Third-year receiver Greg Gaines III caught two long touchdowns, while fourth-year Antwain Littleton Jr. added a short rushing score. Fifth-year Garth White opened with a 48-yard field goal, and Rhode Island built a 28-point halftime lead before adding 27 more points in the second half. The win marked URI’s fourth straight conference victory and kept the Rams atop the Coastal Athletic Association standings. For more, visit Abby LePage’s article.

Men’s Soccer

FINAL (10/18): Saint Joseph’s University 2-1 URI

Rhode Island’s postseason hopes dimmed with a 2-1 loss to Saint Joseph’s on Saturday. Fifth-year Tommaso Rossetto and first-year Cristian Oliveira connected for the deciding goal in the 62nd minute. Second-year Theo Harris scored for URI in the 15th, but late chances from first-year Kyler Vojvodic and third-year Tiago Barriguinha missed as the Rams fell short. Women’s Soccer

FINAL (10/16): URI 5-0 George Washington

FINAL (10/19): Saint Louis University 4-1 URI

Rhode Island blanked George Washington 5-0 on Thursday, Oct. 16, for its fifth Atlantic 10 Conference win. Third-year Lauren MacDonald scored directly from a corner kick in the first half, then added another goal in the 81st minute. Fifth-year Mie Carstensen, fourth-year McKenna Sylvester and third-year Megan Steinbach also scored for the Rams. Rhode Island’s defense held the Revolutionaries to one shot on goal, while third-year goalkeeper Dani Eden made two saves to secure the shutout.

Saint Louis defeated Rhode Island 4-1 on Sunday, led by fourth-year Julia Simon’s hat trick. Sylvester put Rhody ahead early with a free-kick goal after a foul, but the Billikens answered with four straight goals, including two Simon penalty kicks at 14:19 and 58:18. Volleyball

FINAL (10/17): Saint Louis 3-1 URI

FINAL (10/18): Saint Louis 3-0 URI

Rhode Island dropped a 3-1 match at Saint Louis on Friday. The Rams took the opening set 25-18, but the Billikens hit efficiently over the final two frames, totaling 32 kills with six errors to win 25-18, 25-18 and 25-17.

Saint Louis won three consecutive sets against Rhode Island to complete a weekend series sweep on Saturday. Rhode Island pushed the Billikens in the first two sets but couldn’t close them out. Golf

Nassau Intercollegiate (10/20-10/21): First of 12 teams

Second-year Tyler Bruneau shot even par in the final round of the Nassau Intercollegiate, leading Rhode Island to its third team title in five events. The Rams finished with a score of 31-over par, six strokes ahead of the field. Bruneau improved by 10 strokes from the previous round, while fourth-year Aidan O’Donovan, second-year Luke Stennett and third-year Josiah Tong all placed inside the top 15. Swim and Dive

FINAL (10/18): Northeastern University 156-143 URI

Northeastern edged Rhode Island 156-143 on Saturday at the Tootell Aquatic Center. The Rams led early after fourth-year Olivia Winslow and first-year Emily Whiteneck swept the one-meter dive, but the Huskies took control by winning three straight events. For more, read Charlie Adams’ article.

Rowing

Head of the Charles (10/18-10/19)

URI traveled to Boston to compete in the Head of the Charles over the weekend. Both of the Rams’ boats placed 20th in the Championship Fours and Eights categories.
