The University of Rhode Island men’s soccer team split its two games this week, losing a 1-0 match on the road against Davidson College before returning home for a senior night 4-0 victory over Central Connecticut State University.
A penalty kick ended up being the difference in Saturday’s road matchup against the Wildcats. URI fourth-year midfielder and team captain Brett Schwab was called for a foul inside the box in the 58th minute. Davidson third-year Patrick Ward netted the penalty kick that ended up being the only goal of the evening. The teams combined for nine shots on goal.
The Davidson match ended what had been a three-game unbeaten streak for the Rams. They returned to Kingston on Wednesday, aiming to continue to build upon a two-game unbeaten streak in front of their own fans.
Rhody honored seven seniors prior to Wednesday night’s CCSU match. With 15 underclassmen on the current roster, the seniors are far from the majority on this URI team. URI Head Coach Gareth Elliott still credits them for much of the camaraderie built throughout the season.
“They’ve been great,” Elliott said. “The group is real tight-knit right now. The seniors have done a great job leading that group [and] keeping that group tight together.”
The seniors made their impact felt in the box score. Rhody’s 4-0 victory was helped, in part, by two of the night’s honorees. Fourth-year forward Mathias Taylor recorded an assist, and fifth-year Austin Rocke netted his first goal of the season and of his Rhode Island career. This performance had an even greater impact for Rocke considering the fact that he started his collegiate career at CCSU.
“Obviously I have a lot of memories there; [I] scored 10 goals there,” Rocke said. “[Lots of] ups and downs throughout my career there. Coming into this game, it was emotional, because the first game I ever played for Central Connecticut State was actually against URI, so it was kind of like a full-circle moment playing against them with URI.”
This was just the fourth appearance of the season for Rocke as he settles into a new role in Kingston.
“He’s done great,” Elliott said. “He’s been there when called upon, and he’s done a great job and really competed hard. He did that tonight again and scored a goal.”
The 4-0 victory was also aided by goals from first-year Sinan Bruning, second-year Theo Harris and first-year Everson Goglia. In its final nonconference game of the season, URI took down a winless Blue Devils team and has three games in Atlantic 10 Conference play remaining before the playoffs. The Rams currently sit at seventh in the A-10 standings after Wednesday night, with the top eight teams making the A-10 Tournament.
“It was important to get a shutout at home [and] build a little momentum,” Elliott said. “It was important to get some guys some minutes because we don’t know who we’ll need down the stretch.”
The Rams will look to continue to stay in the mix for a playoff spot this upcoming week. They travel to Philadelphia to take on sixth-ranked Saint Joseph’s University at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
