The University of Rhode Island men’s club hockey team swept fellow Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association opponent Lehigh University over the weekend as it stretched its winning streak to five games.
On Friday, Rhody opened up the scoring early off of URI third-year forward Max Lockwood’s goal less than three minutes into the game. Four minutes later, URI second-year defenseman Colin Beisel scored his first goal of the year to give the Rams a 2-0 lead in the first period.
In the second period, Lehigh put its first one in the net as first-year forward Matt Nacinovich scored just four minutes into the period. The Rams answered Lehigh with a goal of their own just 28 seconds later, as second-year forward Aidan Darlington put a goal into the back of the net to give them a 3-1 lead.
With less than three minutes left in the period, Lehigh second-year forward Jesse Heinberg cut the lead back down to one with his fifth goal of the season. URI headed into the third period holding a slim 3-2 lead.
The third period was all Rams, as they put three goals past Lehigh to secure a 6-2 win. URI second-year forward Cam Cyr scored on the power play just two minutes into the period. Then, Lockwood got his second goal of the game six minutes later to give Rhody their biggest lead of the day, 5-2. URI tacked on another insurance goal just two minutes later from second-year forward Nathan Marshall. The goal gave Rhody a 6-2 lead that they would hold onto for the last 10 minutes of the game.
The two teams finished their weekend series on Saturday night, with Rhody coming out on top 5-3.
Lehigh third-year forward Max Toomey gave URI a four-minute power play with two minutes left in the first period after he was called for tripping and cross-checking. URI took advantage of the power-play opportunity as second-year forward Owen Hall tipped in a pass from Cyr to score the first goal of the game. Less than a minute later and with 14 seconds left in the period, Cyr added a goal to his stat line. The score was his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
“[Cyr]’s dangerous with the puck and stick,” URI Head Coach Joe Augstine said. “That’s what he does, and that’s what he’s going to do.”
The second period was dominated by Lehigh as it scored three unanswered goals to take its first lead of the series. Fourth-year forward Mason Goldstein scored a tip-in goal 11 minutes into the period. Toomey was able to redeem himself after his costly first-period penalties with his first goal of the season four minutes after Goldstein’s goal. Toomey’s goal tied the game at 2-2. Then, with less than 30 seconds left in the period, Heinberg scored Lehigh’s third goal of the period on the power play.
The Rams took back control of the game in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals themselves to secure the win and sweep of Lehigh.
URI fourth-year forward Shane Mulhern put his shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3 with less than eight minutes to go in the period. Cyr got his second assist of the game off the goal.
With less than 30 seconds left in the period before the game would head into overtime, Hall scored his second goal of the game to give Rhody the 4-3 lead. Lockwood would score on an empty net seven seconds later to give Rhody the insurance goal and the final score of 5-3.
“I was just really proud [of] how we hung in there,” Lockwood said. “I think we could all agree it wasn’t our best game, but good teams find a way to win, and we’re really proud of how the team rallied together and got it done.”
The Rams will travel to Indiana, Pennsylvania, to take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania for another two-game series on Friday and Saturday.
