This Week In Sports – 10/2

Football

FINAL (9/27): Western Michigan University 47-14 University of Rhode Island

Rhode Island suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, getting roughed up by its only Football Bowl Subdivision opponent, Western Michigan. Rhode Island held a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a score from fourth-year running back Antwain Littleton Jr. After that it was all Western Michigan, as the Broncos scored 44 unanswered points on the Rams.

Rhode Island’s defense had a tough time stopping the Broncos, giving up 216 yards on the ground and 156 yards through the air. For more, read Charlie Adams’ article (rhodycigar.com).

Men’s Soccer

FINAL (9/30): Stony Brook University 2-2 URI

Men’s soccer finished with a tie against Stony Brook University on Tuesday night in Kingston.

In a back-and-forth matchup, Stony Brook got an early goal to take the lead on URI. It wasn’t until the 69th minute that the Rams responded with a goal of their own from first-year Kyler Vojvodic. Stony Brook quickly answered right back, but then URI once again matched them to secure the 2-2 tie. For more, visit Abby LePage’s article (rhodycigar.com).

Women’s Soccer

FINAL (9/25): La Salle University 1-0 URI

FINAL (9/28): URI 3-0 St. Bonaventure University

Women’s soccer split a pair of games this week, losing at home to La Salle before bouncing back on the road against St. Bonaventure.

In a defensive battle, La Salle was able to pull ahead of URI on a late goal in the 76th minute. The Rams outshot the Explorers 16-6 and had four shots on net to La Salle’s three, but in the end it was La Salle’s first-year forward Kayden Williams who sealed the game.

In Sunday’s game, Rhode Island was able to hold the Bonnies in check, recording its seventh shutout win of the season. The Rams’ offense was led by fourth-year McKenna Sylvester, who scored two of Rhode Island’s three goals and had six shots on net. The other goal was scored by third-year Lauren MacDonald, who also had an assist on the day. For more, read Michael Petraske’s article (page 12, rhodycigar.com).

Volleyball

FINAL (9/26): George Washington University 3-0 URI

FINAL (9/27): George Washington University 3-1 URI

The Rams traveled to Washington, D.C. over the weekend to take on George Washington. URI came out winless as George Washington was able to grab both matches on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Rams’ biggest impacts were fourth-year outside hitter Emma Vente, who had nine kills and two blocks, and first-year Hannah Jonick, who had seven kills and four blocks.

Saturday’s contest saw second-year Havyn Rolle collect a whopping 20 kills for URI, despite the defeat. For more, visit Ryan McKenna’s article (rhodycigar.com).

Golf

University of Connecticut Invitational at GreatHorse (9/28-9/30): Third out of 15 teams

URI had a harsh start to the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse on Sunday, starting out in 12th place, but was able to have a strong bounce back on Monday and Tuesday to finish in a tie for third place.

The Rams had a shaky start in the opening round, as all five of Rhode Island’s golfers were at least four-over par. On Monday, the Rams got off to a hot start, going five-under on their first six holes. The Rams carried this momentum over into Tuesday, where they finished 11-under as a team to finish strong.
