Lebron’s second decision

“The Second Decision,” made by Los Angeles Lakers All-Star LeBron James, has struck some controversy among fans and the media, as there have been mixed emotions toward the announcement.

On Oct. 6, James made a post on social media stating he’d be making “the decision of all decisions” in what looked to be a sit-down interview with a reporter. The post spread like wildfire throughout the basketball world in just hours, and many fans across the country started speculating about what the announcement could be.

Many people believed it would be his retirement, as he’s now entering his 23rd season in the NBA–the most out of any other player in league history. Others thought he might be getting traded, as rumors about him returning to his original team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, have been talked about within the media.

But let’s back up, what made these fans think this in the first place?

In July 2010, James had a heavily anticipated sit-down interview with sports commentator Jim Gray, in which he made the decision to leave the team that drafted him, the Cleveland Cavaliers, to join the Miami Heat. Fans of LeBron and the Cavaliers were outraged at this time , as many saw this as a betrayal of the franchise and a weak move from the league’s biggest superstar.

Fast forward to today, the “Second Decision” put the basketball world to a halt, as LeBron fans worldwide did not want to accept that the end might be near for The King.

However, the video took an unexpected turn, as it turned out to just be an advertisement for James’ collaboration with Hennessy Very Superior Old Pale.

For most basketball fans, the announcement was a sigh of relief. Having said that, some were very unhappy with the outcome of the decision, as they bought tickets to his last regular season game after the prices skyrocketed, which he is now being sued for.

Personally, I see this as genius marketing. James knew that by promoting the advertisement as the “Second Decision” and structuring the video just like the previous decision in 2010, he would receive significantly more exposure within the news and get more live viewers on the ad itself.

He isn’t going anywhere just yet, and in the wise words of James himself, “The Decision has been made. Cheers to year 23.”
