CAA Power Rankings – Week 7

Over halfway through the season, the Coastal Athletic Association teams have continued to work their way up and down our rankings.

Each week, The Good Five Cent Cigar Sports Staff votes on their picks for each team’s spot out of the 14 in the conference.

Here is what we came up with ahead of week eight:

14th Place: University at Albany Great Danes (1-5, 0-2) (-)

The Great Danes were not in action this week, but their losing record speaks for itself, keeping them at the bottom of our rankings.

UAlbany is coming off a 47-12 loss to Stony Brook University the week prior. It will take a miracle to come off of a week’s rest in the midst of a two-game losing streak to get a win against its next opponent, the University of Rhode Island.

13th Place: North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Aggies (1-6, 1-2) (-)

The Aggies’ lone conference win might be the only reason they aren’t at the bottom of our rankings this week, as they extended their losing streak to four.

South Carolina State University took down the Aggies 22-14 on Saturday, despite fifth-year kicker Andrew Brown setting a program record with three field goals.

12th Place: Hampton University Pirates (2-5, 0-3) (-1)

Despite leading Campbell University 14-10 at halftime, the Pirates were outscored by the Camels 28-7 in the second half and took a 38-21 loss over the weekend.

Hampton finished with 207 total yards in the game in comparison to Campbell’s 426. The Pirates will be put to the test this weekend, as they travel to take on Villanova University.

11th Place: Bryant University Bulldogs (2-5, 0-3) (-1)

Taking on in-state rival Brown University, the Bulldogs dropped their fourth straight game in a 29-19 score over the weekend. The Bulldogs led Brown 12-0 at halftime before giving up 29 points in the second half.

Safe to say that the Bulldogs will head into their bye week grateful for the much-needed time off as they look to change around the course of their season.

10th Place: University of New Hampshire Wildcats (3-4, 1-2) (-1)

Despite putting up a good fight against URI, the Wildcats still fell below .500 with a 38-27 loss on Saturday. The Wildcats kept the Rams scoreless in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead into the final frame, but URI’s offense turned it on for three touchdowns in the final quarter.

UNH has lost two straight and will need to dig deep in its final five contests against conference opponents if it wants any shot at the postseason.

9th Place: Stony Brook University Seawolves (3-3, 1-1) (-3)

The Seawolves were off this week but still moved down three spots due to their last win being against the last-place Great Danes. Yes, the Seawolves scored 47 points in the win, but they still sit at .500 overall and in conference play.

The opportunity to prove themselves awaits, as the Seawolves will travel to face Monmouth University in what could be a season-making matchup.

8th Place: Towson University Tigers (3-4, 1-2) (-1)

Facing the top-ranked offense in the Football Championship Subdivision, the Tigers managed to tie Monmouth early in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell 42-31.

After facing two of the conference’s toughest foes, the Tigers head into their bye week looking to refresh their energy and finish out the season strong.

7th Place: Campbell University Camels (2-5, 2-1) (+5)

Picking up their second win of the season, the Camels rushed for 301 yards against Hampton on Saturday to jump back into the top 10 of our rankings.

Second-year JJ Cowan had 142 of the team’s rushing yards and three touchdowns in the afternoon. Fifth-year Lakeem Rudolph notched the team’s first pick-six since 2021 to end the third quarter, giving a confidence boost to the offense.

6th Place: College of William and Mary Tribe (3-3, 2-1) (-1)

The Tribe headed into their bye week with a win over NC A&T, but they still have some work to do in order to emerge as a top-five team in the conference. The best way to do so? By taking on top-five opponent Elon University this Saturday.

Considering the tight 31-24 loss against Villanova University on Sept. 27, the Tribe are capable of competing with the best in the conference, and they’ll be up to the challenge.

5th Place: University of Maine Black Bears (3-4, 2-1) (+3)

Winning their third straight game in a 20-13 score over Merrimack College, the Black Bears will head into their week off with a major boost of confidence following their slow start to the season.

A clutch fourth-quarter fumble was not taken for granted by the Black Bears, as they put together a nine-play drive to score the game-winning touchdown. Some even better news for the Black Bears: they’ll be at home for their next two games following the bye week.

4th Place: Elon University Phoenix (4-3, 2-1) (-2)

The Phoenix dropped two spots this week after falling to Villanova 29-21 this weekend. Elon dropped the 14-3 lead it held at halftime.

A touchdown in the fourth quarter put the Phoenix back up 21-20, but Villanova returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and never looked back. With five games remaining in the season, the Phoenix will look to slide back into a top-three spot in the rankings.

3rd Place: #15/16 University of Rhode Island Rams (5-2, 3-0) (-)

A 38-27 comeback victory over UNH was not convincing enough to move the Rams back up our rankings this week. Led by fourth-year receiver Marquis Buchanan and fourth-year quarterback Devin Farrell, URI put together a three-touchdown fourth quarter to take down the Wildcats.

Nonetheless, the Rams are back in the win column and will look to cruise past their next couple bottom-five conference opponents to gain more momentum toward the season’s end.

2nd Place: #14/15 Villanova University Wildcats (4-2, 3-1) (+2)

With three straight wins and four of their next five games being held at home, the Wildcats are riding high.

Fifth-year quarterback Pat McQuaide threw for 255 yards and had two touchdowns on Saturday afternoon against Elon. Through the worst of their schedule, the Wildcats show no signs of slowing down on the path to the postseason.

1st Place: #10/11 Monmouth University Hawks (5-1, 2-0) (-)

The Hawks remain undefeated in conference play following Saturday’s win over Towson. Monmouth’s powerhouse of an offense once again came through in all four quarters of the contest.

Halfway through the season, Monmouth sits atop our rankings for the second straight week, and it will take a big effort to kick the Hawks out of that top spot.
