University of Connecticut Northeast Challenge (4/18-4/19): Second of 14 teams

The University of Rhode Island men’s track and field team placed second at the UConn Northeast Challenge with 136.5 points, highlighted by event wins from fifth-year Alexander Baez, fourth-year Mason Brubaker and third-year Antonio Capalbo. UConn Northeast Challenge (4/18-4/19)

Holy Cross Invitational (4/19): Third of five teams

Fifth-year Megan Wood led Rhode Island at the UConn Northeast Challenge on Friday, winning the discus with a throw of 49.48 meters. Wood’s mark ranks third all-time in program history. URI then finished third at the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday, scoring 149 points thanks to four individual wins and a relay victory. FINAL (4/23): URI 9-7 UMass

Rhode Island dropped its sixth straight game on Friday, falling 3-2 to St. Bonaventure after a three-run fourth inning by the Bonnies in the first of a three-game series. The Rams then fell 5-1 to St. Bonaventure in the second game of a Friday doubleheader, committing four errors and mustering just three hits. To finish out the series, URI lost 5-4 to St. Bonaventure on Saturday, completing a three-game series sweep. The Rams led 2-0 early but allowed four runs in the fifth inning. Despite a late rally by URI, the Bonnies held on for the win. Second-year pitcher Avery Vale-Cruz tossed a complete game on Wednesday, allowing five hits with eight strikeouts, leading URI to snap its eight-game losing streak against UMass. In the second game of their doubleheader, the Rams erased a four-run deficit to defeat the Minutewomen 9-7.

Baseball

FINAL (4/18): URI 11-10 University of Dayton

FINAL (4/23): URI 12-4 Brown University

Rhode Island outlasted Dayton 11-10 in an Atlantic 10 Conference battle on Friday. The Rams jumped to an early lead with home runs from fourth-year Eric Genther and third-year Jack Hopko. Despite Dayton coming back to tie the game, second-year Scott Penney’s two-run single in the eighth gave URI the win. Fifth-year Trystan Levesque pitched a gem on Saturday, allowing two runs over seven innings, as Rhode Island defeated Dayton 8-4 in the second game to clinch the series. The Rams went on to complete a three-game sweep with an 8-1 victory on Sunday. First-year Jake Cullen pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits to seal the win. On Wednesday, the Rams scored six in the third inning and four in the fifth to take down Brown 12-4. Hopko set URI’s single-season RBI record with a two-run single in the third. Women’s Tennis

FINAL (4/19): UMass 4-2 URI

Rhode Island dropped its final regular season match 4-2 to UMass on Saturday. First-year Katharina Spieth and third-year Nikki Fernando earned singles wins, with Fernando securing her 50th career victory. Despite a win in No. 1 doubles, UMass claimed the doubles point. Women’s Lacrosse

FINAL (4/19): URI 17-16 Duquesne University

Rhode Island rallied from a five-goal deficit to defeat Duquesne 17-16 on Saturday. Trailing 13-8 at halftime, the Rams surged in the third quarter, tying the game at 14. In the fourth, fifth-year Caitlin Dellecave’s goal sealed the victory, giving Rhode Island its third straight Atlantic 10 win. For more, read Michael Petraske’s article (page 16, rhodycigar.com).

Rowing

Lake Morey Regatta (4/19)

Rhode Island competed at the Lake Morey Regatta on Saturday, with its Varsity 8+ boat finishing about eight seconds behind Northeastern University in the team’s closest race of the day. For more, read Charlie Adams’ article (rhodycigar.com).
