The Materials We Leave Behind: How Manufacturing Research can Expand Material Options for Membranes for Water, Gas, and Ion Separationsstrength. The TFC membrane is defined by these two layers being chemically distinct and therefore customizable based on desired characteristics (e.g. cost, processability, selectivity). The most commonly manufactured TFC membrane is the reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membrane. These membranes are made through interfacial polymerization, a process developed over 40 years ago by John Cadotte, that enables this selective layer to be formed in-situ directly onto the supporting membrane. The process is scalable and leads to high performance RO membranes, though does have some drawbacks. The process is relatively uncontrollable and is limited to a small subset of polymer materials. In spite of these limitations, this manufacturing process has not changed in over 40 years, meaning the TFC membrane’s use has not expanded into other membrane technology spaces (e.g. gas separations and ion exchange).In this talk, we provide context for why this has happened and offer a new manufacturing innovation, electrohydrodynamic spray, that may enable the expansion of the TFC membrane to beyond RO and NF. We demonstrate the formation and scale up of defect free membranes using both conventional and unconventional polymers for a number of membrane processes.

With the motto “Running (Nearly) Bare Because We Care,” the purpose of the event, besides collecting clothing for the less fortunate, is to show students what it feels like to be outside with limited clothing, a problem for hundreds of people throughout the state. The Nearly Naked Mile is an event designed to raise awareness about the difficulties some people face when they don’t have the appropriate attire for the fall and winter seasons in Rhode Island. The Language of Climate Politics: climate activist and author Genevieve Guenther in conversation with journalist Daniel Wolfe:Join the Department of English, the Metcalf Institute, and the Harrington School of Communication and Media for an evening with Dr. Genevieve Guenther, climate activist and author of The Language of Climate Politics: Fossil-Fuel Propaganda and How to Fight It (Oxford UP, 2024). Moderated by Daniel Wolfe, graphics reporter for The Washington Post and a 2024 alum of Metcalf's Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists, Guenther will discuss her investigation into the propaganda that justifies the fossil-fuel economy and offer listeners new ways to talk about the climate crisis in an effort to create transformative change.All members of the community are invited.
