Buying out the Market: How States Co-opt Religion During Democratic Backsliding

Friday, April 25, 2025 2:00–3:00 PM
  • Location
    Washburn Hall # 111
  • Description
How do government policies toward religion affect the practice of religion and its relationship with democracy? Many scholars have likened a country's religious landscape to a marketplace - government policies can create monopolies. This talk explores the role of state religious policy in democratic backsliding. Drawing on cases from Israel and Hungary, Dr. Szendro shows that both supportive and restrictive policies can isolate religious groups from the rest of civil society and make them dependent on the state.
