- Jun 309:00 AMXV Progress in Motor Control “Crossroads between Neurophysiology and Applications”The URI’s Physical Therapy Department, College of Health Sciences, and the International Society of Motor Control (ISMC) are happy to extend a warm welcome to our colleagues and friends attending the XV Progress in Motor Control meeting at the University of Rhode Island on the Kingston Campus, RI, USA, from June 30 to July 2, 2025.Progress in Motor Control is the biennial meeting of the ISMC. The Society’s mission is to “stimulate and foster education and open debate among scientists from all nations on basic and applied research in the area of the control of movements of biological systems.” Previous meetings have been held worldwide in Rome, Auckland (virtual), Amsterdam, Miami, and Budapest. The XV Progress in Motor Control meeting will be sponsored by the URI’s George & Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience and Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program. The meeting will be held in the Auditorium of the Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences (CBLS) at the University of Rhode Island.
- Jun 3010:30 AMPhysical Oceanography Seminar: Liv CornelissenTitle: “Oceanic Influences of the Drygalski Ice Tongue in Terra Nova Bay: An Observational Perspective”Speaker: Liv Cornelissen, Ph.D. student, Univ. of AucklandAbstract: The Drygalski Ice Tongue (DIT), located in the western Ross Sea, is the largest remaining ice tongue and forms the southern boundary of Terra Nova Bay (TNB) and enables it to operate as a polynya by preventing the transport of sea ice into the bay from the south. The surrounding water masses interact with the DIT, and changes in their properties can influence the tongue’s stability. In this talk, I will present findings from a decade-long hydrographic mooring timeseries (DITx), deployed near the DIT and in the Drygalski Trough. This dataset captures variability across interannual, seasonal, and polynya-event timescales. Water masses that are formed in Terra Nova Bay and are observed near the DIT are high salinity shelf water (HSSW), TNB ice shelf water (ISW) and Antarctic surface water (ASW) and form the seasonal cycle. The interannual variability is particularly evident in the timing of seasonal transitions and in long-term temperature and salinity trends. I will also discuss the connectivity between the DITx record and other regional datasets, including Mooring D and ARGO floats.
