- Apr 312:40 PMChE Grad Seminar - Ronald Larson, PhD University of MichiganMulti-Scale Simulations of Thermodynamics and Flow of Polymeric, Colloidal, and Surfactant MaterialsRonald G. LarsonDepartment of Chemical Engineering, University of MichiganContinuum-level thermodynamic, rheology, and flow properties relevant to industrial applications can now be computed from multi-scale simulations ranging from molecular dynamics (MD), Brownian dynamics (BD), and continuum fluid mechanical simulations. Molecular simulations are aided by biasing methods, such as umbrella sampling, and forward flux sampling. Reduction of computation is assisted by non-linear optimization methods, including the Genetic Algorithm and the Particle Swarm Method. We demonstrate the power of these methods by computing the dynamics and rheology of “polymer-like” worm-like surfactant solutions and colloid-polymer mixtures used in consumer and industrial products, namely shampoos and paints, and film blowing of polyethylene polymers. We also compare the predicted results to experimental data, and extract information, that is unavailable, or not easily available, from experiments alone.
- Apr 33:00 PMWriting Teaching StatementsWhat is a teaching statement? How do you write one? If you’re applying for a position that asks for a teaching philosophy statement, or even just updating your own teaching portfolio, then this workshop can help you! In this 1-hour workshop, Associate Dean and Professor Colleen Mouw and English PhD candidate Tia Hines will share the basics of teaching philosophy statements and will distinguish these from related documents that you might also need to write (for example, statements of teaching effectiveness). Together we will look at examples of different teaching philosophy statements, discuss common mistakes writers make, and ask you to consider your own philosophy of teaching and pedagogical practices. This workshop counts towards the Equitable and Inclusive Teaching & Pedagogy Badge.
