URI artist teacher mezzo-soprano Caroline O'Dwyer and bass-baritone Devon Russo present three unique vocal chamber works that explore the interplay between Western Classical Music and Greek Mythology:Joseph Haydn’s secular cantata Arianna a Naxos (1789) depicts the Theseus myth from his lover Ariadne’s point of view, after she finds herself deserted by Theseus on the island of Naxos. It explores themes of love, trauma, and abandonment as well as the inherent dangers of what Joseph Campbell calls the “hero’s ego” ; Jonathan Dove’s one-act opera L’altra Euridice (2001) tells the traditional Orpheus myth with its universal themes of love, death and the power of music, but in a radically altered account of the transpiring events, reversing Orpheus’ and Plutone’s roles as hero and villain ; Benjamin Britten’s dramatic cantata for mezzo-soprano, Phaedra (1976), revisits the Theseus myth from his wife, Phaedra’s point of view, exploring themes of lust, desire, despair, and moral virtue. Art League RI and the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography are featuring the works of artists and scientists in a new exhibition titled “The Synergy Project: A Collaboration of Art and Science” at Studio Blue on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus.With its goal to communicate oceanographic research to wider audiences through art exhibits and events, The Synergy Project has paired artists across many mediums with scientists from URI and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution since 2020. This third Synergy Project group exhibition features 50 pieces from returning artists and scientists as well as new work exploring new topics. Each exhibition is an opportunity for guests to learn about ocean science in an engaging and unconventional way, prompting new conversations about science and its importance in climate regulation and ocean health with communities near and far.

A stunning, new translation of Euripides' play by a poet and classicist Anne Carson. Carson writes, "Euripides was a playwright of the fifth century BC who reinvented Greek tragedy, setting it on a path that leads straight to reality TV. His plays broke all the rules, upended convention and outraged conservative critics. Bakkhai is his most subversive play, telling the story of a man who cannot admit he would rather live in the skin of a woman, and a god who seems to combine all sexualities into a single ruinous demand for adoration."
