- Apr 411:00 AMThe Promise and Perils of GenAI in Drafting Teaching and Research StatementsWhat are the uses and limitations of generative AI to help draft teaching and research statements or other job search materials? Join this session for a basic introduction to the promise and perils of GenAI in developing materials for a job search, while collectively considering ethical and practical implications. This session is suitable for participants with minimal experience using generative AI but will be most useful if you know how to access either Microsoft CoPilot through your UConn Microsoft 365 login, or ChatGPT (both the free “mini” and paid versions will be demonstrated). Presenters: Tina Huey, Associate Director of Faculty Development, UConn's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) | Kay Gruder, Associate Director, Graduate Student and Postdoc Career Programs and Services, UConn's Center for Career Readiness and Life Skills. This is a joint URI-UConn program.

- Apr 42:30 PMMarine Geology and Geophysics Seminar: Dr. William FrankTitle: Crustal stresses and damage evolve throughout the seismic cycle of the Ridgecrest fault zoneSpeaker: Dr. William Frank, Assistant Professor, MITAbstract: Earthquakes release tectonic stress abruptly, but this stress builds slowly with time through the coupled evolution of faults and the surrounding crust. Rheology governs this interplay, controlling how stress accumulates, deforms the crust, and relaxes. Seismic velocity changes track these processes, but typical methods are limited to shallow depths. Using receiver functions, we monitor seismic velocity and anisotropy changes throughout the crust during the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence. Shallow co-seismic changes recover within months, while deeper changes accumulate post-seismically and persist, revealing a depth-dependent rheology. This contrast defines a strength boundary, with a weak upper crust and strong lower crust, aligning with co-seismic and post-seismic slip concentrations. Lasting deep changes suggest both the fault zone and the crust prepare for future earthquakes over inter-seismic time scales.
