- All dayThe Synergy Project: A Collaboration of Art and ScienceArt League RI and the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography are featuring the works of artists and scientists in a new exhibition titled “The Synergy Project: A Collaboration of Art and Science” at Studio Blue on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus. With its goal to communicate oceanographic research to wider audiences through art exhibits and events, The Synergy Project has paired artists across many mediums with scientists from URI and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution since 2020. This third Synergy Project group exhibition features 50 pieces from returning artists and scientists as well as new work exploring new topics. Each exhibition is an opportunity for guests to learn about ocean science in an engaging and unconventional way, prompting new conversations about science and its importance in climate regulation and ocean health with communities near and far.
- 2:30 AM1hMarine Geology and Geophysics Seminar: Dr. Ethan BaxterTitle: The Story of Garnet: Tectonics, Water, and TimeSpeaker: Ethan Baxter, Ph.D., Associate Dean for the STEM Disciplines and Professor, Boston CollegeAbstract: Garnet is a common mineral in many metamorphic rocks that dazzles with its colors and crystals. It also grows over a wide range of conditions, recording processes of the deep earth spanning millions of years. We will explore how garnet can be used as a history book of those tectonic, petrologic, and geochemical processes, many of which involve the role of fluids in the earth system. Garnet is just one example of how "Every Rock Has a Story," referring to Ethan Baxter's YouTube Channel to inspire kids of all ages about the geosciences.

- 10:30 AM1hPhysical Oceanography Seminar: Dr. Maurice HugueninSpeaker: Dr. Maurice F. Huguenin, Visiting scientist at WHOI & Postdoc at UNSW SydneyTitle: Processes and dynamics of global to regional ocean heat uptake and variabilityAbstract: In this seminar, I will present key results from two of my recent publications. In these projects, I have investigated ocean warming and its changes over the last 50 years using the global ocean sea-ice model ACCESS-OM2. I will highlight how changes in surface winds and thermal properties have each driven about 50% of the anomalous ocean warming since the 1970s. This warming has occurred mostly in the Southern Ocean because of its uninterrupted westerly wind belt that sustains cool sea surface temperatures and efficient heat uptake from the atmosphere. On the one hand, this buffers the worst impacts of climate change but also has huge impacts on global sea levels and the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Next, I will present evidence how El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the world’s most dominant interannual climate mode, impacts West Antarctic subsurface shelf water temperatures due to its atmospheric link to the Amundsen Sea. This has implications for interpreting basal melting of ice shelves on interannual to decadal time scales in West Antarctica.

- 7:30 PM1hBakkhai by EuripidesA stunning, new translation of Euripides' play by a poet and classicist Anne Carson. Carson writes, "Euripides was a playwright of the fifth century BC who reinvented Greek tragedy, setting it on a path that leads straight to reality TV. His plays broke all the rules, upended convention and outraged conservative critics. Bakkhai is his most subversive play, telling the story of a man who cannot admit he would rather live in the skin of a woman, and a god who seems to combine all sexualities into a single ruinous demand for adoration."
