What challenges do educator’s face? What restrictions are there preventing education from occurring? Are the requirements, expectations and limitations changing the way Educators function? What are the successes - giving students the opportunity to find their expressive voice?This exhibit will include the artwork and voices of a group of area educators from public, private and independent educational settings on all levels. The BES Colloquium Series is the research seminar series for the College of Environmental Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. BES students nominate speakers from across several disciplines including: Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB), Ecology and Ecosystem Science (EES), Environmental and Earth Sciences (EVES), Evolution and Marine Biology (EMB), and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS). The Department of Computer Science and Statistics is hosting a presentation about Single-cell gene expression spatial and temporal modeling with deep learning. Ritambhara Singh, an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Data Science and a member of the Center for Computational Molecular Biology at Brown University, will present her team's efforts to build deep learning frameworks and leverage existing single-cell gene expression measurements to overcome technical constraints on the ability to collect all datasets at single-cell resolution. Singh will discuss scGraphHiC, which performs graph deconvolution to extract genome-wide single-cell spatial interactions from bulk contact maps using single-cell gene expression as a guiding signal, and scNODE, which predicts single-cell gene expression at missing time points to enable cell developmental analysis. Singh is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Data Science and a member of the Center for Computational Molecular Biology at Brown University.

URI's Forensic Science Partnership lecture series is one of the more unique lecture series in Rhode Island. The Oct. 17 topic is “The role of microscopy in forensics,” with Dr. Otto Gregory, professor of chemical engineering. Dr. Gregory is director of the URI Sensors and Surface Technology Partnership. His research has been funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force, and many of the jet engine manufacturers, including Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, General, Electric, and Honeywell. All lectures are open to the public at no cost and are held on Fridays at 3:30 p.m. in the Richard E. Beaupre Center for Chemical and Forensic Sciences (Room 100), 140 Flagg Rd., Kingston.
