Danielle Dennis elected vice president of International Literacy Association Board of Directors
KINGSTON, R.I. – May 27, 2025 – The International Literacy Association (ILA) announced today that Danielle Dennis, dean of the University of Rhode Island’s College of Education, has been named vice president of their board of directors, effective July 1.
The 12-person board is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the organization, upholding its mission to empower educators, promote evidence-based practices, and advocate for literacy as a fundamental human right.
Dennis has been an active member of the association for more than 25 years. Her scholarship centers on building teacher capacity, literacy assessment, and equitable educational policy, with a firm commitment to bridging research and classroom practice.
“ILA plays a critical role in shaping literacy policy and practice around the world,” said Dennis. “As vice president, I’m honored to continue collaborating with our members, councils, and global partners to advance our shared commitment to research-based instruction and equitable access to literacy for all learners.”
The ILA’s professional membership of literacy educators, researchers and experts spans 128 countries. For nearly 70 years, it has set the standard for how literacy is defined, taught and evaluated, connecting research and practice to improve the quality of literacy learning across the globe. Through its Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals, it provides an evidence-based benchmark for the development and evaluation of literacy professional preparation programs.
The ILA collaborates with partners around the world to develop, gather and disseminate high-quality resources, which include three peer-reviewed and edited journals—The Reading Teacher, Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy and Reading Research Quarterly.
