KINGSTON, R.I. — May 15, 2025 — The University of Rhode Island is launching an effort to bring a custom URI license plate to Rhode Island drivers. The effort, which will be part of the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles charity plate program, will enable alumni, students, faculty, staff, fans, and friends to display their Rhody spirit on their cars and wherever the road takes them.

The University is now gauging interest for a specialty plate that would feature URI’s name and an iconic University image. The state’s charity plate program allows nonprofit organizations and institutions to create distinctive license plates while raising funds for charitable causes. The proposed plate would not only showcase University pride on roads across the Ocean State but also contribute directly to a University-affiliated philanthropic fund.

“Rhode Island alumni, students, faculty, staff, and fans all share a profound passion for URI,” said Matthew McDonald, vice president for communications and marketing. “That Rhody pride resonates deeply throughout the state, and we are excited to launch this initiative, providing our community with a new way to showcase their connection to URI while also supporting our students and our role as the state’s flagship university.”

But before the plates can hit the streets, there’s one important step: interest. State regulations require a minimum number of pre-commitments. To that end, the University has launched an interest form, inviting people to show their support and share their ideas about the license plate design.

The plate design is being led by the University’s communications and marketing division, with student and faculty collaboration. Designers are working together to ensure the final plate is instantly recognizable, appeals to fans and supporters, and conforms to DMV regulations.

The Rhode Island DMV’s charity plate program has supported a wide range of organizations and causes in recent years, from shark research and lighthouse preservation to uniquely Rhode Island events like Gaspee Days. By joining the program, the University is tapping into a creative and visible way to deepen alumni and fan engagement and build URI awareness and pride.

If enough interest is generated, the University plans to begin accepting formal applications and collecting the required fees later this year. Plates would be available to all Rhode Island registered vehicle owners.
