Baseball

Rhode Island cruised to an 8-1 win over St. Bonaventure in the opener of Friday’s doubleheader behind a dominant start from third-year Jeremy Urena. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk. Fourth-year Brody McKenzie led the way offensively with four hits, two RBIs, two runs and four stolen bases. URI continued its momentum with a 5-3 victory in the second game. Trailing 3-2, the Rams scored three runs in the sixth inning, including fifth-year DJ Perron’s solo homer. Second-year pitcher Joe Sabbath sealed the win with two scoreless innings. However, a five-run first inning and a grand slam in the sixth powered the Bonnies to a 12-8 victory in the series finale on Saturday. Rhode Island also lost 7-4 to Bryant on Tuesday, as a late two-run homer secured the Bulldogs’ win. The Rams responded by powering past Brown 16-6 in Providence on Wednesday. The Rams led throughout, collecting double-digit hits for the 21st time this season. Fourth-year Eric Genther’s grand slam in the fifth inning sealed the victory. Softball

FINAL (4/14): Saint Louis University 3-0 URI

FINAL (4/14): Saint Louis 8-0 URI

Rhode Island was shut out in both games of Monday’s doubleheader against Saint Louis, falling 3-0 and 8-0 at the URI Softball Complex. The Rams brought the tying run to the plate in game one, but SLU’s fourth-year pitcher Taylor Hochman closed the door. In game two, the Billikens broke a 2-0 game open with a six-run seventh. Despite outhitting Saint Louis through six innings, Rhode Island was blanked for the fourth straight game and left multiple runners stranded. For more, read Chase Abrams’ recap.

Women’s Track and Field

Friar Invitational (4/11)

Third-year Lily Saul delivered a standout performance in the one-mile run at the Friar Invitational on Friday, placing seventh out of 60 runners at Providence College’s Ray Treacy Track. The host Friars swept the top three spots. In the 3,000-meter, second-year Sophia Piccone led the Rams with a sixth-place finish in 10:12.94. Third-year Linsey Arends also finished in the top half of the field, placing 11th with a time of 10:22.66. Fourth-year Lindsay Turgeon led URI’s group of four runners in the open 800-meter with an 11th place finish in 2:18.64. For more, read Tyler Powell’s recap.

Men’s Track and Field

Friar Invitational (4/11)

South Florida Invitational (4/11-4/12)

The University of Rhode Island men’s track and field team competed at the Providence College Friar Invitational on Friday. In the 800-meter run, second-year Elijah Saddlemire finished sixth with a time of 1:56.27, while third-year Adam Melnick placed ninth in 1:56.70. Second-year Nick Martine broke the program record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second consecutive week with a time of 8:59.14. For more, read Justin Theriault’s recap.

Women’s Lacrosse

FINAL (4/12): URI 15-8 George Mason University

Seven different Rams found the back of the net in URI’s first conference road win of the season and second straight A-10 victory. Second-year Caralie Basuel scored in the opening minute. George Mason responded quickly with a goal, setting the tone for a back-and-forth opening quarter that featured two ties and three lead changes. URI took control from there, shutting out George Mason in the second quarter. Goals from second-years Sydney MacDonald, Brinley Myers and Basuel gave URI a 6-5 lead heading into halftime. URI sealed the victory in dominant fashion, closing the game on a 5-0 run over the final six minutes of play.

Golf

The Rutherford Intercollegiate (4/12-4/13): Fourth of 12 teams

First-year Luke Stennett captured his first collegiate title as the golf team placed fourth at The Rutherford Intercollegiate. Stennett finished six-under, closing with a final round of 70 to top the 62-player field. He carded 15 birdies over three rounds, pulling away late to win by two strokes. URI led after round one, paced by Stennett shooting five-under and fifth-year Sean Magarian shooting two-under. Despite strong early play, a late-round slide dropped the Rams to fourth at 12-over.
