- Jan 30, 2025: ChE Grad Seminar: Dr. Mu-Ping Nieh, UConn at Kirk HallA Robust Discoidal LNP Platform for Targeting Theranostic Carriers And Their Structural Characterization Abstract: Biocompatible lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have become emergent nanocarriers for delivering RNAs and DNAs. The common challenges of RNA-LNPs include structural analysis, reproducibility, storage, etc. In this talk, I will present a discoidal LNP platform (also known as bicelle) of which we have applied a bottom-up approach to understand how bicelles self-assemble, transform into other morphology and promote cellular uptake. This platform is applicable for theranostic delivery nanocarriers which will potentially overcome the abovementioned challenges. The thorough comprehension of the self-assembling behavior leads to applications for aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE)/photoacoustic (AEP) and templated polymerization for nanorings and nanowebs. The well-defined nanostructure is mainly characterized using small angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) which prove to be powerful methods for in-situ studies. - Jan 31, 2025: Physical Oceanography Seminar: Dr. Yanxu Chen at Narragansett Bay CampusTitle: Eddy-Induced Air-Sea Coupling in Momentum and Heat Budgets Speaker: Dr. Yanxu Chen, Postdoctoral Investigator, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Abstract: The debate surrounding air-sea coupling focuses on determining whether the ocean or the atmosphere is the primary driver of momentum and heat transfers, and on elucidating the mechanisms that govern these processes across different scales. In this presentation, I will discuss two studies that examine eddy-induced air-sea coupling: (1) analyzing why mesoscale eddy signatures in sea surface height and sea surface temperature may exhibit seemingly paradoxical signs, and (2) investigating the impact of balanced vortices (eddies) on the nonlinear responses of the ocean Ekman layer to wind stress in an idealized setting. These two studies are “coupled” to illustrate how the sea surface heat budget can either be coupled with or decoupled from the momentum budget. View on site | Email this event
