KINGSTON, R.I. – April 23, 2025 – Those who supported and contributed to an inclusive culture at the University of Rhode Island were honored at URI’s Inclusive Excellence Awards ceremony on April 10 in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

“These awards recognize undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the University who are committed to demonstrating and promoting inclusion at URI in the areas of community leadership, academic excellence, and service,” said URI President Marc Parlange. Parlange also praised the work of URI Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Markeisha Miner.

“During these uncertain times, Markeisha has provided a sense of calm and cool, and in every interaction with members of our URI community she has remained dedicated to our foundational values,” he said.

“Inclusion IS excellence,” said Miner. “We simply cannot be excellent without the contributions of each community member. URI is the #1 public university in New England precisely because of our commitment to inclusion.”

“The Inclusive Excellence Awards bring students, staff and faculty together to celebrate those who work hard to intentionally build inclusiveness into what they do here at URI,” added Michelle Fontes, assistant vice president of Community, Equity, and Diversity. “To be able to celebrate and award our community members who have been recognized by their peers while enjoying great music, food and social connection is a great experience for all attendees —something they make a point to let me know!”
