University of Rhode Island fourth-year Matt Santy was victorious in the URI Heptathlon with the 4,900 points he earned over the two-day event. He came in seventh place in the 60-meter dash, fourth in pole vault, fourth in the 60 meter hurdles and sixth in shot put. Santy also won both the high jump and long jump, and broke a URI long jump record that stood for more than 30 years in the process. Santy jumped 24 feet and 3.5 inches; the previous record was held by Jeff Woods who jumped 24 feet and 2.25 inches in 1991. The men’s track and field team also competed in the Boston University Season Opener, along with the Brown Alden Invitational. Rhody had a pair of first place finishes at the Alden Invitational. Fourth-year Mason Brubaker won pole vault and fourth-year Joachim Ennoo won the triple jump. At Boston University, fifth-year Wisconsin University transfer Joe DosReis, broke the school record for the mile with a time of 4:00.28 minutes. New Balance Early Bird Invitational (12/7)
First-year Lily MacDonald made a statement in her collegiate debut with a second place finish in the URI Pentathlon. She tallied 3,305 points with third place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump. First-year Kathryn Hill also had a strong performance, coming in 11th place with 2,572 points. She was followed by second-year Lily Pittakas who finished in 12th. The Rhody women’s track team was spread out all across New England on Saturday, as the team competed in a total of three different events: the BU Season Opener, Brown Alden Invitational and the New Balance Early Bird Invitational. The Rams performed best at the Early Bird where they had three first place finishes. Fifth-year Sydney Federico won the 500-meter race, first-year Macy Daigle won the high jump and first-year Lily MacDonald earned first place in triple jump. WOMENS SWIM & DIVE
FINAL (12/7): URI 153-106 University of Massachusetts
FINAL (12/7): La Salle University 137-122 URI
URI split a pair of Atlantic 10 conference matchups in a tri-meet on Saturday, moving to 3-3 on the season as it won four out of the 14 events. Four different Rams came in first in their respective events. Fourth-year Maddie Tetreault won the 800-yard freestyle, first-year Julia Havice won the 50-yard freestyle, third-year Rylee Kelly won the 500-yard freestyle and fourth-year Hannah Benavides won the 100-yard breaststroke. FINAL (12/7): URI 69-63 Providence College
FINAL (12/10): Brown University 84-80 URI (2OT)
The Rams took on a pair of fellow Ocean State schools this week. On Saturday, they hosted the Friars at the Ryan Center. URI was able to complete the comeback after trailing by seven points going into halftime, and for the first time in five years were able to get the win in the Ocean State rivalry and improve to 9-0 to start the season. However, on Tuesday, the undefeated start would come to an end as Brown won a back-and-forth thriller that went into double overtime. Ultimately, URI didn’t have an answer for Brown fourth-year guard Kino Lily Jr, who had a double-double with 23 points and 10 assists. FOOTBALL
FINAL (12/7): #7 Mercer University 17-10 #10 URI
The best Rams season since 1985 came to an end in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday, as URI lost a competitive game against the seventh seeded Mercer Bears. URI went up 10-7 late in the third quarter thanks to a 56-yard touchdown pass to third-year Marquis Buchanan. In the fourth quarter, however, URI got shutout, and Mercer would come away with the win. URI had two touchdowns taken off the board due to penalties and the Mercer defense had a pick-six which would end up being the difference. FINAL (12/7): Harvard University 60-48 URI
FINAL (12/11): Princeton University 66-54 URI
URI took on a pair of Ivy League foes this week in Havard and Princeton University. The Rams struggled to get any offense going against Harvard with fourth-year guard Sophie Phillips leading the scoring with 17, but no other Ram scored more than seven points. The Tigers would also take down URI; they had three players in double-figures as the Princeton bench combined for 24 points to Rhody’s seven.
