Art League RI and the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography are featuring the works of artists and scientists in a new exhibition titled “The Synergy Project: A Collaboration of Art and Science” at Studio Blue on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus. With its goal to communicate oceanographic research to wider audiences through art exhibits and events, The Synergy Project has paired artists across many mediums with scientists from URI and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution since 2020. This third Synergy Project group exhibition features 50 pieces from returning artists and scientists as well as new work exploring new topics. Each exhibition is an opportunity for guests to learn about ocean science in an engaging and unconventional way, prompting new conversations about science and its importance in climate regulation and ocean health with communities near and far. The exhibit hung in Green Hall, The President’s House and The Welcome Center includes work in a variety of media by 20 artists originally from the Caribbean, Central and South America reflecting many aspects of their culture featuring: Agonza, Angel Cajigas-Arbelo, Nilton Cardenas, Julia Castillo, Luis Cepeda, Raphael Diaz, Tamara Diaz, Ana Flores, Rebecca Flores, Humberto Grullon, Francisco Hernandez, Daniel Manta, Pablo Mijares, Arides Picardo, Gabriel Rojas, Amalia Jose Gonzalez Ruis, Salvador Sanchez, Jose Sejo, Ramon Santiago, Rafael Trinidad, with musician Gian Carlo Buscaglia and poets Luis Peralta, and Raff Diaz performing at the reception. Speaker: Dr. Kurt Polzin, WHOI Title: A Brazil Basin Reprise Abstract: A series of recent modeling studies [Drake et al. 2022, Ledwell 2024] concerning an iconic tracer release in the Brazil Basin [Polzin et al. 1997, Ledwell et al. 2000] document levels of diapycnal mixing required to explain the long term dispersion of the tracer about its target surface. The required mixing in these modeling studies is inconsistent with microstructure observations, consistent with a community myth about “Missing Mixing”. Our hypothesis: We demonstrate that the issue is in understanding the initial evolution of the tracer. Consequently, the microstructure observations need to be taken at face value and are likely consistent with the tracer dispersion. View on site | Email this event

The URI Lyric Stage Workshop, Rachel Hanauer, director, and David Gilliland, pianist present, appropriately enough, two full productions of the 1977 musical, Working, book by Stephen Schwartz (Godspel, Wicked) and Nina Faso, music by Schwartz, Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Mary Rodgers, and James Taylor (yes, that James Taylor), and lyrics by Schwartz, Carnelia, Grant, Taylor, and Susan Birkenhead, in a 2002 revived version that includes two songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton).
